[edit] More on the Official Mawson Lakes Website

Jann Bennett sent me a copy of the Mawson Lakes Online Discussion Paper, March 1999 (Thanks). Amongst some of the points raised, it proposed three scenarios:

  1. No further development: save money, no risk; loss of image, sense of community and stakeholder expectations.
  2. Mawson Lakes Joint Venture led initiative: marketing and promotional tool, develop e-business tools, possibility for commercial partnerships; seed funding required, risk, possible disenfranchisement of local community
  3. Commercial third party led initiative: reduced investment, reduced responsibility; loss of control.
  4. Community led initiative: community driven, involvement; reliant on community interest, time to get established, lack focus of committed project leader, ability to provide a single face to the online representation of the community is likely to be reduced, unlikely to succeed.

elsewhere.. it says:

The initial goals for Mawson Lakes Online should be to effectively utilise the core skill sets and competencies of its key stake holders and partners for the benefit of the community in general. Once the desired services have been identified, classified, costed and prioritised, the initiative will be able to develop a comprehensive business plan and take Mawson Lakes Online to its next phase of development.

We believe that the initial Mawson Lakes Online services with significant potential for development include;

  • the promotion and sales support of land and buildings at the site
  • the provision of development related information to new and potential residents
  • the provision of community news and announcements
  • an online business directory and
  • an online market place with associated secure payments infrastructure

This is good, but I think that they've forgotton some services that are a must:

  • Community quake server
  • Community email, (for when you're not playing quake)
  • Community Help desk, for all the Microsoft users (although I'm not sure whether you'd be able to pay anyone enough to do this job)

There should also be a local ISP (given that AAPT's satellite gateway is here), a computer store in the Town. The local Redhat linux distributer Netcraft is moving into the development, so we've almost set. Anyone know what the plans are for cable (and cable modems) in the area? The other option is air.net.au.
