MawsonLakes.Org uses Free and Open Source software, based around the Linux distribution called Ubuntu.
This software is:
- Free (no cost) to use
- Free to modify and
- Free to redistribute
for any purpose and endeavour, provided that these freedoms are maintained for anyone else who then receives it.
Free and Open Source Software is still covered by copyright laws, but the owner(s) have allowed their software to be distributed under a Free and Open Source licence, which makes is accessible to everyone forever.
Examples of Free and Open Source Software include:
- The Linux operating system kernel
- The GNU system tools, libraries and compilers (which together these make up the GNU/Linux system)
- Ubuntu (and Debian) software distributions
- The Firefox webbrowser and Thunderbird email reader
- OpenOffice - Office Software suite - Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation Software

There are several groups that meet around Adelaide which may be of interest to Linux users:
- ML-LUG - Mawson Lakes Linux User Group (just starting)
- LinuxSA - Meets on the third Tuesday of the month.
- Adelaide Linux Meet-up Group - Meets at 'The Generals Lounge', Colonel Light Gardens
- Linux Supporters Group - Meets first Wednesday of the Month, in the city. Contact Barry Schuetz for mor information.
